Wanna Play This Summer?

Each season, a theme emerges. Calls for rest, comfort, relaxation and play filled my ears as the solstice approached and I decided to stop ignoring their cheerful cries. Time to run toward those fun activities, delve into summer’s opportunities, and embrace play.
After all, it’s too hot to work. Or too pleasant? Too distracting?
One of those things.
Not that I won’t be working but rather, when I do work, I’m choosing to approach everything with a sense of play. That it’s not worth doing if I can’t make it fun.
(This also might be the point where I let you know that I love puzzles so even reconciling bank accounts can be fun for me. It’s a truth not often acknowledged that the cookie consumed after balancing a bank account is the sweetest cookie of all.)
Approaching each task with the question “How can I make this fun?” releases our imagination. We search for fairies among the flowers as we walk the dog. We compete with last week’s time as we take the trash and recycling to the curb. We take revenge on annoying people while we pluck the expired petunia blossoms from the hanging baskets.
“Whoops! No more head for John. HAhaha Cynthia! Your reign of terror is OVER. Hey guy who cut me off. Time to clip YOUR noggin!”
Play boosts energy levels, releases stress, comforts us and reduces burnout. Reframing work or other difficult tasks as play helps you engage in a way that is rejuvenating instead of enervating.
In other words, play is good for you. So…do you need a better reason to play this summer?
