How do you love to play in the summertime? I’m looking forward to seeing a movie in the icy cold cinema on the hottest days, reading on my shady balcony, and walking our dog down by Cayuga Lake while the breeze ripples through the weeping willows. Summertime means chilling out anyway you can, relaxing with friends and finding all of the playtime possible!
That’s why our Books for Thriving Creatives series is filled with playful reads for the whole season. We need a break from the making and the doing and the push-push-push, go-go-go!
We ease into our summer fun-time reading with the question, “What if we approached life as a giant playground for experimentation?”
Tiny Experiments: How to Live Freely in a Goal-Obsessed World by Anne-Laure Le Cunff takes you on a gentle journey of discovery where you shift from ambition and hustle to curiosity, playfulness and connection. Linear goals transform into loops where ideas are tested, questions answered and the outcome informing us while sparking another point of curiosity. And all of that happens in conversation with the world instead of isolation.
One of the things that really appeals to me about Tiny Experiments is that this book comes at creativity with a scientist’s lens and an awareness of the language used in business and hustle culture. As with Le Cunff’s Ness Labs newsletter (which I have read for years), this book intrigues me with her ability to bring these new ideas to you with language that feels familiar.
As we read through this book, it tempts us to stop to do exercises and delve into the process. Even in my first few pages, I’m underlining tons of lines and leaving streamers of tape flags. So, a quick reminder to read the book without stopping, leaving the signposts of underlines, marginalia and tape flags to remind us of the places we want to go back and revisit.
Though, really, it’s summer… Who follows the rules in the summertime?! Have fun and enjoy your own Tiny Experiments!
